Starting a new company is an incredibly daunting prospect and there are innumerable considerations to make before you can finally open those doors and let your employees sit down to work at their desks.

If you’re starting a new business, here are the essential office supplies and equipment you can’t be without…

HR documents

Even as a startup, having an organised and proactive human resource ‘department’ is incredibly important to ensure your company functions as well as it can and your employees have all the information they need. We say ‘department’ but it can be an office manager, secretary or just someone who’s job it is to organise the HR side of things.

Some of the important human resource documents you may need include:

  • Employee contracts
  • Employee handbook
  • Health & safety policies and rules
  • Holiday/absence policies
  • Grievance policies

There are countless others, but these are the kind of HR docs it’s important to have. Business-in-a-box is a great website that has absolutely loads of HR document templates you can download.

Office security equipment

We’re not talking about physical security like padlocks and ID cards here (although that kind of thing is still important), but rather digital security. Protecting your intellectual property, employee records and financial details is of paramount importance, so really shouldn’t be skimped on.

This can encompass a wide range of items, including hardware to backup your documents, such as external hard drives and USB sticks, password protection software or even shredders to ensure confidential documents aren’t viewed by unauthorised people.

This is a pretty obvious one, but always make sure you have enough stationery for your employees. You’d be surprised how often pens go missing! Think about items such as staplers and scissors, which you might not think are essential, but it’s annoying if you need them and don’t have them.

Office cleaning supplies

A clean office is a happy office. You may have cleaners who come in regularly to give the place a wipe down, but you should also stock some office cleaning equipment for your employees to use as well. For example, having computer and laptop cleaning products to hand will hopefully mean equipment lasts longer and is more hygienic to use.

Everyone needs a cup of tea or coffee at some point during the day, so make sure the cupboards are always stocked. A water cooler is also important for those who prefer cold refreshment, and a few biscuits never hurt anyone either.

Plants for the office

Get some greenery in the office. Not only does it look nice, but according to this study, plants have all sorts of other benefits in the workplace, such as:

  • Tension/Anxiety – 37% reduction
  • Depression/Dejection – 58% reduction
  • Anger/Hostility – 44% reduction
  • Fatigue – 38% reduction

Researchers at Cardiff University also found that office plants can increase productivity by 15%.
